Starting the Game

Players take turns progressing through these phases: untap, upkeep, draw, main phase, combat, second main phase, and end step.

Mana is the resource used to cast spells. It is typically generated by lands (which can be played once per turn) or created by creatures. Players cast spells such as creatures (which attack or defend), instants (fast spells), sorceries (powerful but slower spells), enchantments, artifacts, and planeswalkers.

Moving to combat involves one player declaring attackers and the other declaring blockers, with each creature dealing damage according to their power and toughness. Strategic plays include managing resources, timing spells, and anticipating the opponent's moves.

Victory is usually achieved by reducing the opponent’s life to zero, emptying their library, or meeting special win conditions on certain cards. Magic is endlessly customizable and deeply tactical, with thousands of different cards and many different formats to choose from.
